POR vs. PARA

Although both para and por often translate to "for" in English, they are not interchangeable. The simplest way to understand the difference is to visualize them:

PARA

Purpose or Goal ("in order to")

Used before an infinitive verb to explain why you are doing something (para aprender).

Recipient

Who is receiving an object or action (para ti).

Destination

Heading toward a physical place (para Italía).

Deadlines / Future Time

When something is due by a specific time (para mañana).

Opinion / Comparison

To express a personal perspective or a contrast to what is expected.

Employment

Who you work for.

Idiomatic Expressions

There are far fewer idiomatic phrases with PARA, but the ones that do exist are very useful. Notice how they still carry a slight "end-goal" or "destination" feeling.

POR

Cause or Reason ("because of / due to")

The motive behind an action. * Llegué tarde por el tráfico. (I arrived late because of the traffic.)

Duration of Time

How long an action lasts. * Estudié por tres horas. (I studied for three hours.)

Movement ("through, along, by, around")

Passing through or around an area without a specific destination. * Caminamos por el parque. (We walked through the park.)

Exchange or Substitution

Trading one thing for another, or doing something on someone's behalf. * Te doy mi manzana por tu naranja. (I’ll give you my apple for your orange.) * Hoy trabajaré por Juan. (Today I will work for/in place of Juan.)

Means of Communication or Transport ("by")

How something is accomplished or transmitted. * Te enviaré los documentos por correo. (I will send you the documents by mail.)
